Spooky + PSQ @ NUMUS Turn-table Festival
New York City's meta-musical prodigy DJ Spooky has recorded a huge volume
of music collaborating with a wide variety of musicians and composers
such as Iannis Xenakis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Butch Morris, Kool Keith a.k.a.
Doctor Octagon, Pierre Boulez, Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan, Steve
Reich, Yoko Ono and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth among many others
(see www.djspooky.com). DJ Spooky has a new improv show with string
players titled 'Subliminal Strings' which he has performed most recently
with the Ahn Trio in New York. NUMUS Concerts in Waterloo is presenting
a turn-table festival in March 2008 and will feature a concert with
DJ Spooky and the Penderecki String Quartet. Last time DJ Spooky performed
in Kitchener-Waterloo, the concert was sold-out to a predominantly 20-30
year-old audience. (See DJ Spooky hype in Printed Support Material).
The Penderecki Quartet has in the past sought several projects of a
cross-audience nature. Our collaborations with jazz saxophonist Jane
Bunnett brought us to jazz venues in Ontario and BC. Similarly, our
club show Zapparadox in 2004, featuring the music of Frank Zappa, developed
a new audience for the Penderecki Quartet. This past season, Weather-Beaten
(February 2007) was presented as a 'rave-inspired' event that included
Michael Gordon's ecstatic "Weather" for 16 strings, electronics,
and video, and concluded with Waterloo's experimental DJ Jesse Somfay
performing a solo set in the Perimeter's Bistro Lounge. (See the DVD
"Penderecki String Quartet multi-media projects 2006-2007"
submitted in the Audio/Video Support Material, and poster in Print Support
Material enclosed herein).
