JUNO News

Laurier’s Penderecki String Quartet saw some sparks fly at the 2010 JUNO Awards this past April. They were involved in three nominations for recordings they made in the past year. The first nomination was for Album of the Year for a CD made with Canadian harpist Caroline Leonardelli where the Penderecki Quartet joins her on the title track “El Dorado” composed by Marjan Mozetich. The other two nominations were directed at compostions presented on a disc the Penderecki Quartet devoted entirely to Mozetich’s music titled “Lament in the Trampled Garden”. This disc garnered two nominations for Best Classical Composition of the Year, winning a JUNO Award for the title track.

“It is no surprise to us that all three of our nominations for the JUNO Awards this year were works composed by Kingston composer Marjan Mozetich. He writes compellingly beautiful music and he has become the most frequently performed and broadcast of all Canadian classical composers. He has been described as the modern day Tchaikovsky, but I think of his music as being more akin to Debussy. He is extremely popular at the Ottawa Festival and when we performed his Angels in Flight there last summer we got a standing ovation. This JUNO win for his string quartet Lament in the Trampled Garden is perfect timing, since the record company Centrediscs is planning to promote this CD with us on a South American tour in November 2010 to Brazil, Chile, and Argentina, and then to China in May 2011.” - Jeremy Bell
